About Kenmare Bay Special Area of Conservation

Kenmare Bay Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is a designated protected area located along the southwest coast of County Kerry, Ireland. It covers extensive marine and coastal habitats around Kenmare Bay, a large inlet of the Atlantic Ocean, bordered by rugged peninsulas and mountainous terrain. The SAC protects a variety of habitats including sandy beaches, intertidal mudflats, rocky shores, seagrass beds, and submerged reefs. These habitats support a rich diversity of flora and fauna, notably rare and vulnerable species such as bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoises, otters, and numerous seabirds. The bay is especially significant as a feeding and breeding ground for marine mammals and provides crucial habitat for a number of protected shellfish and fish species.

The surrounding landscape offers dramatic scenery including views of the Slieve Miskish and Caha mountains and the rugged coastline, making the area popular for boat tours, wildlife watching, and sea kayaking. The SAC also protects important dune systems and coastal wetlands along the shorelines, which serve as vital nesting sites for birds and as buffers against coastal erosion. Visitors can explore nearby small towns such as Kenmare, which acts as a gateway to the bay, offering amenities, guided wildlife tours, and access points for outdoor recreation.

Kenmare Bay SAC is managed with conservation objectives to preserve its ecological value while promoting sustainable tourism and environmental education. Its combination of natural beauty, rich biodiversity, and tranquil setting draws nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike. The area’s waters and coastal trails provide excellent opportunities for paddling, fishing, and hiking, all framed by the backdrop of Ireland’s spectacular southwest coast.
